Water Roots: why a Venetian brand chose sustainability as its mother tongue
Venice does not have roots in the earth; it has roots in water. Every palace, every foundation, every stone of the city rests on wooden piles driven into the lagoon centuries ago, still there, still holding everything up. It's an image that one breathes in Venice without needing it explained: survival here has always been a matter of balance with water, not domination over it.
From this image comes the name we give to our understanding of sustainability: Water Roots. It is not a slogan conceived at a drawing board. It is the synthesis of an idea we have pursued from day one: a brand can grow strong without needing to exploit, just as a city can withstand water by learning to coexist with it.
What "Water Roots" means for VGO
For us, it means something simple, though not easy to implement: every material choice, every production phase, every communication must be able to withstand the scrutiny of those who dig deep, just as the foundations of Venice withstand the gaze of those who lean from a bridge and look underwater.
We don't promise perfection. We promise transparency: we say where the ideas come from (here, in Venice), where the products take shape (in China and Latvia), and why we chose certain materials over others. Those who buy from us don't just buy a garment or a pair of sneakers. They buy the possibility of truly knowing where what they wear comes from.
Materials: certified bamboo and linen, two different ways to respect water
The connection between VGO and water is not just narrative. It is also very concrete, and concerns the materials we choose.
Bamboo, which we use for our t-shirts, is one of the most water-efficient plants in existence. It grows quickly, requires no artificial irrigation once rooted, and returns more oxygen to the environment than it consumes during cultivation, compared to many other textile crops. However, it's important to be precise on one point: the bamboo we use cannot be certified as "organic" in the strict sense of the term, because that designation is legally reserved for cotton. This is why our bamboo t-shirts are OEKO-TEX certified, a standard that guarantees the absence of harmful substances at every stage of fabric processing, from raw fiber to finished garment.
Linen follows a similar logic. It is one of the natural fibers that requires less water to cultivate compared to conventional cotton, and it is particularly suitable for temperate climates like the one surrounding Venice. Our linen trousers arise from this same attention: a material that yields to water without demanding it excessively, much like the city that inspired them.
When we talk about cotton, and only in that case, can we use the word "organic": it is the only fiber in our line for which this certification has a precise regulatory basis, and we apply it rigorously, without conveniently extending it to other materials.
Production and transparency: where our products are truly made
We do not hide behind an aesthetic of sustainability without substance. VGO is born in Venice: here we conceive the collection, define the style, and decide which materials deserve to enter our catalog. But physical production takes place elsewhere, in China and Latvia, with partners selected for their manufacturing standards and the certifications they adhere to.
We say this openly because we believe that true sustainability begins with truth, not marketing. A brand that hides where it produces is not protecting an industrial secret: it is hiding something from its audience. We prefer the opposite approach: to tell the entire supply chain, with its balances and compromises between the ideal and the achievable, exactly as they are.
Why origin matters as much as material
In the world of sustainable fashion, the conversation almost always focuses on materials: how much water does this fiber consume, how much CO2 does that process emit, what certification guarantees what. These are fair questions, and as a brand, we have a duty to answer them precisely, without linguistic shortcuts.
But there is another question that is rarely asked: where does the idea behind the product originate? For us, the answer is always the same: from Venice, from a city that made water its identity rather than its limit. A brand that carries this story in its name (Vegan, Genuine, Organic) does not do so to fill an empty space in the narrative, but because it believes that sustainability is first and foremost a matter of roots: knowing where you come from helps you understand where you want to go.
We do not offer discounts as a sales lever: our only welcome gesture to those who choose VGO for the first time is a kit designed to communicate this philosophy from the very first contact. Because we believe that an informed customer is more valuable than a customer convinced by a promotion.
Roots, when they sink into water instead of earth, demand more attention, more care, more patience. But they hold, if they are well made. It is the lesson Venice has taught for centuries, and it is the lesson we try to incorporate into every garment we design.
